Moving a Stacked Washer and Dryer: How Hard Is It?

I'm looking to move my stacked washer and dryer (the dryer is on top of the washer, and they're separate units) from one end of the house to the other – still on the same floor, just quite a distance away. I know I'll need to disconnect the water and electrical connections, and then reconnect everything at the new location. I'm not an expert in plumbing or electrical work, but I'm fairly handy and open to learning. How difficult is it to uninstall and reinstall these appliances? Should I tackle this myself, or would it be better to hire a professional or a handyman for the job?

You can definitely handle it yourself or with a buddy to help lift. Just remember, you'll need to disconnect three hoses from the washer—hot water, cold water, and waste goes into a drain. Check your dryer outlet at the new location beforehand to make sure your dryer plug fits. I usually disconnect the electric cords first, then the vent tube from the dryer, unscrew the pieces connecting the washer to the dryer, and finally detach the washing machine from the water hoses. Moving the appliances is just the reverse of that step-by-step! Don't forget to use plumber's tape for the connections!

It’s not too hard technically, but washing machines are heavy. You’ll at least need one more person to help with lifting! Consider using a dolly, especially for the washer, since it's tricky to maneuver on your own. Just ensure you have the right electrical and plumbing hookups at the new spot before you start moving things. Think about renting a pneumatic mover if you want an easy lift for both units, but it’s also manageable with a hand dolly and teamwork!

Good point about weight! Just to add, it's easier if you've got a flat path to move them along. Do keep in mind that you want to avoid damaging floors or knocking things around while you work!

Be cautious about your floors while moving these heavy units! Using wood panels or moving blankets can really help prevent damage. I also suggest separating the washer and dryer if you can, as it makes the moving process easier and lighter. Make sure to shut off the water first, as relying on valves can lead to leaks or worse. Those connections can be pretty crusty, and a little support will go a long way to avoid snapping pipes!
