My Dad Used 2,4-D Herbicide on Our Garden—How Bad Is It for Our Plants?

So, my dad thought he was being helpful and spread some 2,4-D "weed and feed" herbicide pellets in the garden to fertilize our plants. He didn't bother to check the label, and unfortunately, he got some into my garden too. I'm really worried about how this will affect our plants. What should I expect, and what can I do to fix this mess?

As a former county extension agent, I've seen this scenario before. 2,4-D is not safe around edible plants, and it's best to remove and destroy any vegetables grown in that area. There's no research showing it’s safe to eat them, even if they look okay. I recommend avoiding growing anything edible there for the rest of the year. Sorry to hear about your plants!

I know, it’s really disappointing. I had such high hopes for my harvest!

Definitely take the extension agent's advice—it’s for your safety.

Try watering the plants heavily to flush out as much of the herbicide as possible. You might buy them some time, but don't expect miracles. Just be cautious and consider not eating anything from that area for now!

Thanks, I’ll give that a shot! My priority is getting rid of the poison.

Good thinking! I’d do that too, just to be safe.
