My Water Bill Jumped to $833—What Should I Do?

I've just received a shocking water bill for $833! All my pipes are above ground from the meter outward. I did notice that my basement toilet was constantly running because the chain got stuck under the flapper, which I've now fixed. Could just that one toilet account for such a huge bill? To add to the confusion, when I filled my pool (it's 0.18' by 6'), that only cost $900.

It's very possible that one toilet could lead to a bill like this, especially if it was constantly running. If it lost water frequently over a month, it could add up significantly. You might want to keep an eye on your meter to see if it’s still running, just to be safe.

Exactly! Keeping track of your meter can help you catch any other potential leaks before they get out of hand.

Don't rule out billing errors either! I once got a bill with an extra zero by mistake because of a clerical error. It might be worth investigating further just in case, especially if you've not experienced plumbing issues before this.

Yes, a running toilet can definitely cause your water bill to skyrocket like that. Even if it seems like just a small leak, it can add up quickly over time. You should definitely check with your water company to see if they can help you out since you fixed the issue!

I agree! Once you explain what happened, they might work with you on the bill. I've had luck with them doing adjustments before.
