Nail or Screw for Fence Rails: What’s Best?

I'm about to build a fence and I've previously used the nail-to-post method, which has held up well. However, I noticed that the previous owner of my property used toenailing, and that also lasted a long time. What do you all recommend: toenailing with screws or the nail-to-post technique?

Metal hangers with screws are definitely the way to go. They may not look the best, but they can withstand a lot of weight and last through challenges like storms.

I recommend screwing to the post. It's stronger and will hold up better over time.

You should avoid driving nails all the way in if you're planning on making repairs later; they can be tricky to remove without damaging the wood. Screws don’t have that issue, and toenailing might not hold well in tough weather. I'd stick with through nails for shear strength and screws where you need a good clamping force.
