I'm planning to build a chair from scratch and I'm stuck on what to use for the main joints. Should I go with nails or screws? Are there any benefits of using either for DIY projects in general, like woodwork or even metal?

I've actually had screws snap on me when hanging a trellis, so I've learned that nails can be better for shear force applications. Screws are awesome for keeping things tightly together when there's not a lot of stress, though.
I'd say nails are stronger in terms of shear force, but they don't grip as well as screws. For your project, I recommend trying pocket hole screws—they're a solid choice for furniture. Just keep in mind, nails can be great for larger projects where some flexibility is needed.
If you're making a chair, joinery and glue might be the way to go. But when it comes down to nails and screws, screws are great for clamping things tightly together, while nails hold better under sheer stress. Each has its strengths depending on what you're doing!
