Hey everyone! I've recently started getting into woodworking, but life is throwing some curveballs my way. My partner and I are splitting up, and I need to sell my house and rent for a bit until I possibly buy a condo. I really want to keep pursuing woodworking, but I'm concerned about how to manage it in a smaller space without bothering my neighbors or creating too much dust—especially with my cat around. I guess my power tools will have to go into storage most of the time, but I'm thinking I might be able to work with hand tools. Any tips or tricks for working in confined spaces while being respectful to those around me?

Have you considered joining a maker space? Some of them offer memberships where you can use shared tools and equipment, saving you from needing a home setup altogether!
If there are garages available for rent in your apartment, that could be a great place to set up! Otherwise, switching to more hand tools is really your best bet. I used hand saws when I lived in an apartment and just tried to keep power tool use to a minimum. It can be tough, sorry you're going through this!
Fair enough. I'll have to keep my eyes open for options like that, or maybe a community space I can book in the building. But yeah, unpacking/packing will not be fun. Thanks. I appreciate it.
Using hand tools is definitely the way to go! My dad had a workbench tucked behind his sofa, and he made it look like just a dresser when not in use. Hand tools create way less dust and noise, though you’ll likely still need to do some sanding outside to keep it manageable. A ground-floor unit can also help minimize sound transmission to neighbors. You can still make a lot of cool stuff in a small space!
Oh, good idea! Especially on having a ground floor unit.

Last time I lived in the city, there was a woodworking studio that provided time and tools, but it was really expensive. I'll look into it again, as well as try to find other maker spaces that are woodworking-friendly. Thanks!
