Hey everyone! I'm considering changing 800 sqft of my lawn into a rock landscape because the grass has been struggling due to inconsistent sunlight and pesky tree roots. I'm trying to keep my budget around $3500. A landscaper quoted me $1.50 per square foot for grass removal, but I'm thinking about renting a motorized sod cutter and handling the rock placement myself. So, my main questions are: Do I need a weed barrier before laying down the rock? Also, how tough is it to use a sod cutter by myself? I'm petite and won't have any help, but I can rent the cutter and a truck for $300. Any other materials or steps I should consider? I'd appreciate any tips. Thanks!

I think $1.50 per sqft for sod removal is pretty reasonable, at least in my area. Using a sod cutter can be a good workout; they're heavier than they look and you'll need to toss the sod into a wheelbarrow or something to haul it away. If you're fit and used to doing DIY projects, you should manage just fine, but it could be tough if you’re not used to it. For getting rid of grass, consider some alternatives like using Roundup (just the pure glyphosate) to kill it off, but remember to follow the instructions carefully. Another option is to smother it, which you can find plenty of info about online. Just keep in mind that both methods may take some time to fully clear the grass before you can start laying the rock.

Thanks for the tips! Good to know that I can manage without the weed barrier if I want to. I'm fine with working on the gravel over a couple of weeks instead of all at once. I might need to come up with a quick plan, though; my HOA doesn’t like delays!
