Hey everyone! I'm a first-time homeowner and I'm looking to transform my current closet space into something more functional. The opening right now measures 96 inches by 47 inches. I'm considering installing a set of bifold doors that would swing open away from the entrance, possibly using 80x36 inch doors. To make this work, I might need to extend the walls on either side by about 5.5 inches and add a header to adjust the opening to 80 inches. If I go ahead with this plan, do I have to remove the drywall to attach the new walls, or can I just drill into the corners? Also, do I need to cut out the laminate flooring to connect the new wall to the slab or can I drill through it? I'm open to any suggestions you all might have since I'm still learning about all this stuff that comes with owning a home!

You won’t have to take down the drywall to put up the new walls; just drill into the corners with longer screws to reach the studs. If your flooring isn’t installed yet, adding a transition piece between the current flooring and the new closet floors is a good idea. For laminate, a moisture barrier is a must underneath between the slab and the flooring. If you frame out to narrow the space at all, then yes, you should cut the laminate under that area.

Yep, that makes sense! The moisture barrier should already be there since the laminate extends into the closet area, right? I was thinking of using an oscillating multi-tool to remove the section under where the new wall will go.
