Need Help Building an ADA-Compliant Handicap Ramp for My Porch

Asked By CraftyBuilder42 On

I'm looking to build a handicap ramp that meets ADA standards for my porch, which is approximately 36 feet long and has a rise of 60 inches. This is my first time tackling such a project, so I'm open to any suggestions or advice that could help. Thanks in advance for your assistance!

You might want to consider getting a lift instead; otherwise, your ramp will need to be around 60 feet long! That's quite a stretch. If you're set on building it, think about using a zig-zag design with two platforms to ease the incline.

Yeah, I was thinking of doing the zig-zag approach! It'll definitely help with the length.

Have you thought about why you want to build your own ramp instead of using a prefabricated option? ADA compliance means one foot of ramp for each inch of rise, so you're looking at a pretty big project if you decide to go with 60 feet of ramp and the necessary handrails.

I'm a maintenance guy for a non-profit, and I'm trying to keep costs down. I know this will be a big job, but I've built porches and a shorter ramp before, so I'm up for it!

Whenever I'm in a bind about ramp construction, I just search for 'ADA compliant handicap ramp for 36ft run.' I found some really helpful resources, including plans and specifications that might guide you. My neighbor has a similar ramp, and it wasn't too hard for the contractor to put together!

Using 4x4 deck blocks can simplify things since it's classified as a temporary structure. This might make getting building permits easier! If you're interested, check out this product from Lowe's for an easy start.
