Need Help Deciding Whether to Quit a High-Paying Job for Happiness

I'm reaching out for some advice about a situation I'm currently in. I've been working as an engineer for a couple of years, starting with a startup where I was underpaid and overworked. With my family facing some financial difficulties, I decided to switch jobs, and now I'm making a decent salary freelancing. However, I'm finding freelancing isn't fulfilling for me at all. I dread the night shifts, which ruin my sleep cycle and make it hard to spend time with friends and family. I'm torn between quitting freelancing to pursue a more stable job that aligns with my passions, even though it might pay less. I feel guilty since I'm making a good income. Am I being unreasonable in wanting to prioritize my happiness over money?

It sounds like you’ve taken on a lot of responsibility for your family. While it's admirable to help, you should also consider your mental health. Talk to your family about how their financial situation affects you, and maybe adjust your contributions. Changing to a job that makes you happy is worth it, even if it means a pay cut. Consider reaching out to your mentor for potential opportunities that align better with your interests.

It sounds like this freelance gig is draining you. Money is important, but so is your well-being. If freelancing isn't working for you, it's okay to transition to a healthier work environment. Just make sure you have a financial plan in place to manage any debts before you quit. Don't lose sight of what makes you happy; you deserve a fulfilling job as much as anyone else.

That’s a great point! I’m currently working on my finances and once I have a safety net, I’ll look for a job that fits my well-being.

I see where you’re coming from—it’s not easy juggling your career and family expectations, especially in a culture that puts family before self. Consider talking to your family about your needs and plans. Find a job that offers both a good work-life balance and sufficient income, and don’t hesitate to prioritize your mental health over financial gain.

You’re in a tricky spot, balancing family obligations with your own happiness. It’s okay to say no sometimes. Set boundaries with your family regarding financial support; they can understand if you communicate openly. Plus, finding a fulfilling job won’t just help you; it could ultimately benefit your family too, as a happier you can support them better long-term.
