Need Help Designing a Childproof Wearable BLE Beacon

Asked By CraftyAdventurer99 On

I'm working on a DIY project to create a BLE beacon that broadcasts a static MAC address to monitor my autistic child and make sure they don't run out the front door. The trackers available on the market are often pricey and GPS-based, which come with their own set of challenges. While I can find some BLE trackers, most of them are bulky, and I'm struggling to find wristbands that meet these criteria: they need to comfortably fit a BLE beacon and also be difficult for a child to remove. Any suggestions or ideas for this project would be greatly appreciated!

This totally doesn't sound shady at all, Mr. kidnapper!

I don't know you or the original poster, but they've been around for 15 years and have participated in many respectful conversations, including topics about family members with autism. I think we can trust them over some random troll.

You might want to look at two types of devices: Some give alerts when your child goes out of range, while others can locate them. The second option is tougher to implement than the first. For your project, consider using a small BLE fob, similar to what sailors use to detect someone who has fallen overboard. These fobs send signals regularly, and you can use a simple setup with an ESP32 chip to create a device the size of a matchbook that runs on a coin cell battery for about a year. You can find tutorials online to help you with the hardware and software setup.

Instead of looking for a ready-made wristband, consider building around the beacon itself. A lot of people opt for silicone bands with locking clasps that are often used in medical settings, like ID bands, as they can be secured better. You can encase the BLE beacon in a small 3D-printed or epoxy-sealed case that can be riveted or bolted onto the band. To make it tougher for your child to remove, use one-way snap rivets or security screws. Also, choosing a band with a tamper-evident clasp would make it impossible for them to take off without scissors. Just make sure everything is smooth and rounded to prevent any scratching or poking.
