I'm trying to improve my son's closet which has some narrow compartments. I want to remove the vertical pieces (they're circled in red in the image) to create better storage for clothes. The screws appear to be a special type, so I'm looking for recommendations on what tool I should use to get them out efficiently. The compartments are only 5.5 inches wide, making things quite cramped. Thanks in advance for your suggestions! Here's the link to the image: https://imgur.com/a/Qn4sIP0

Those screws look like cam locks. If that's the case, you might need to take off the top and bottom parts first to avoid damaging the shelf. Just a bit more work, but it'll save you from wrecking anything!
Those look like Phillips head screws to me. You might want to try a #3 screwdriver if a #2 doesn't fit well. Be careful to apply the right pressure or you could strip them! Good luck with the project!
Yeah, I'd say they're Phillips head, probably a #2. Just a heads-up, you should use a good quality screwdriver, or you risk stripping them—trust me, it’s a hassle if that happens!

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely make sure to use a good screwdriver.
