I'm trying to swap out my girlfriend's door knob, but there's an issue. The hole for the new knob is quite a bit farther from the edge of the door, and even with the new knob fully extended, it doesn't seem to catch properly in the door jamb. Plus, the door has seen better days and is pretty chewed up, which might be adding to the problem. I thought about patching it up first but I'm nervous that might make things worse. I'll try to share some pictures in the comments if I can manage it.

I had the same issue with my door once! If drilling isn't an option for you, you could use a door knob spacer kit, which can help make adjustments without the need to re-drill. Just make sure to measure everything out first. And don't forget to check the door latch alignment; it may need a little tweaking too.
It sounds like you might need to re-drill the hole for the new knob. Given that the existing hole is far from the edge, adjusting it a bit could help align it better with the jamb. Also, if the door is chewed up, that could definitely cause issues with the fit. If you're unsure about patching it, you might want to consider using a wood filler to level the surface first before drilling new holes.
