Hi everyone! I'm working on building the ladder for a Putnam sliding library ladder kit, but I'm running into an issue. My local hardwood supplier only has boards up to 8 feet long, and I need two siderails that are over 118 inches. Are there any good online sources where I can order lumber of that length? Also, I'd love your recommendations for lumber sites in general. Are there specific wood species I should prefer or avoid? Lastly, should I just give up and pay a hefty price for a prefinished ladder kit? I'm located in the US. Thanks for any suggestions!

Try asking your current lumber supplier if they know any other places that sell longer lengths. They probably get these inquiries often, so they might have some good leads for you.
Check out your nearby big box hardware stores; they usually stock 10 ft hardwood like red oak and maple. If they don’t have it in stock, they might be able to place an order for you. You could also consider construction lumber which tends to be cheaper and might meet your needs.
I appreciate that! I did find some red oak there, but I’m hoping to explore more exotic woods. I don’t mind spending a bit extra for quality since my ladder is going to match a bookcase made from bloodwood and padauk.
What if you considered laminating two pieces of wood together? You could glue them to create a thicker piece, and if you stagger the joints, it can provide great load transfer and allow you to make the length you need for the ladder.
Good idea! Just to clarify, I'm specifically on the hunt for exotic hardwoods. My bookcase is made from bloodwood, padauk, and mahogany, and I want something that complements that.
