Need Help Starting My Craft Table Project!

Hey everyone! I'm looking to build a craft table using a modified plan I've found, but I'm stuck on a few details. First off, the plan doesn't specify what type of wood to use. Does anyone know if standard big box store wood would work? Also, I'm on the hunt for some 5x5 plywood but can't find it anywhere. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the world of woodworking! For your craft table, I'd recommend birch plywood if you're going that route. Big box store wood will work for the smaller boards (like 1x2s and 2x2s), but for the 1x10s and 1x12s, I'd suggest checking out a lumber yard for poplar if you plan to paint it. It's budget-friendly and gets the job done! As for the 5x5 plywood, I think Baltic birch is your best bet. It's stronger and prettier, but it can be a bit pricier. Definitely call around to local lumber yards; they might have what you're looking for. Just a heads up, this project can be a bit challenging for a beginner, so be prepared for some bumps along the way. Good luck! Let me know if you have any more questions!

Really good advice! A friend's saw will make things easier. Just take your time and enjoy the process; you'll learn a lot!

Thanks! This is really helpful! I’m modifying the plan to make it 5x5, and I’ve got a family member who can help with the cuts, so I feel okay about that (lol). I’ll definitely look into local lumber yards. I plan on painting it, so that tip is great too! I know this is a bit ambitious for a first project, but honestly, as long as it works and I don’t lose a finger, I’ll call it a success!

The first step is just to take that first step! Get your materials and tools sorted out, and you'll be on your way.
