Need Help With a Laser-Sensing Chime Project Idea!

I'm working on a fun project where I want to create a large laser-sensing target, around 17" x 20". The idea is for it to make a noise when it's 'hit'. I've already asked for advice on the optics side, like using a lens with a standard laser tag target, but I'm also interested in the electronics aspect. I'm thinking about using a more sensitive sensor inside a small target, placed in a box with white paper, which would reflect the light and trigger the sensor when hit. Maybe even a simple Arduino setup with adjustable sensitivity for this idea? Alternatively, I thought about having multiple sensors in an array behind the paper or using a scattering lens. I can handle assembly and soldering but I'm new to design. I'm eager to learn and would love any suggestions!

You might want to look into using a photoresistor for your project. They are quite sensitive and could help you detect the laser hits effectively.

Consider utilizing an array of photodiodes. They can respond well to different light levels, and you can encode data into your laser pulse using something like the NEC IR protocol. Just keep in mind that some laser units are small and not programmable, so make sure your design can accommodate that!
