I'm having a bit of a problem trying to fix my bathroom sink. I replaced the old drain trap because it was wearing out, and I switched to a new PVC kit. I tried to just change the trap, but since the plumbing is from the 1930s, it didn't fit, so I went ahead and replaced the pipe from the wall too. Now I'm stuck because I can't seem to make a good seal, and it's leaking where the PVC connects to the metal pipe at the wall. I think I need a new flat rubber gasket so that I can tighten everything up properly but the gaskets that came with the kit don't seem to work. What am I missing?

It sounds like you might need a Fernco coupling to connect your new PVC to the old cast iron pipe. Just make sure it’s designed for that specific transition. It’s super common, and having the right coupling should help you get a good seal.

I don’t have before photos but if it helps, I can snap some of the current setup. I just don’t want to mess it up since it’s the least leaky it’s been!
