Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum, but I've been following along for a while. I'm reaching out because I've got a sump pump issue that I'm not sure how to handle. I bought my house about a year and a half ago, and I've never had a sump pump before, so I could use some guidance.
Initially, I could hear the pump working multiple times a day, especially when it rained or during snowmelt. However, about eight months ago, it just stopped working, and I haven't heard it pump since then. I contacted RotoRooter to inspect it, thinking it might need replacing. They checked it and said it was a high-end unit and working fine after testing it with water. They mentioned that the dry weather could be why it hasn't pumped.
Now that we're in a wet season, I still haven't heard it kick on, and I'm worried something might be wrong. I noticed a little trickle of water outside a few weeks back, but that's been it. Additionally, I've got a couple of mature trees on my property, which makes me wonder if roots could be blocking the drainage somehow. I'm in Southern Ontario, where we get some crazy weather, so I feel like this is odd.
Any ideas or advice on what might be going on? Should I just fill the sump pit with water again to test it out? Also, who should I contact for troubleshooting? Thanks a ton for any help!

Yeah, I'm with you on the water table thing. It does seem odd for the water table to be low for such a long stretch, especially with how wet it’s been lately. Just keep an eye on that drainage in your basement; sometimes, the pit can get clogged and lead to issues like this.
I recommend checking out a local plumber or basement waterproofing company if it's not running. RotoRooter is quick, but they can be pricey. If the pump is tested and working, but the pit is dry, the problem could be that there's not enough water getting into the pit, which might not be due to roots. It’s worth investigating if you have any drainage tiles that could be blocked.
That's super helpful! I didn’t realize that could be an issue. I’ll definitely dig deeper into what’s going on with the drainage.

Thanks! I’m hoping the drainage is okay too. I’ll check it out and report back.
