I'm trying to build a wooden fort for my daughter, a lean-to style similar to a pergola that can hold up a roof made of draped blankets. I've initially made one using PVC pipes, but now she wants a more permanent wooden version to celebrate her high school graduation. We're aiming for a size of roughly 11x7. I'm concerned that using 2x6 lumber might make the structure feel too bulky in her room. Are there any alternatives to the 2x6, or are there brackets available for smaller lumber?

If you're feeling adventurous, you might even consider using dowels that are 3/4” or 1/2” thick—just keep in mind the corners could be a bit tricky. You could look for some plastic corner connectors that would fit well with the dowels to make it easier.
