Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on how to deal with my upstairs bedroom windows that get super sunny from morning to night. I've got two main issues I need to tackle: First, I need something that will block as much of that early morning light as possible (I still want to keep the view, just tone it down a bit since it gets too bright around 6 AM). Second, I need to combat the intense heat that makes this room the hottest in the house by the afternoon. Right now, I have blackout curtains, but there's light leaking around the edges, and they don't do much for cooling down the room. I'm considering window film or tint, but it seems like a lot of options are aggressive privacy films, which isn't my concern—I just want to cut down on light and heat. Plus, I'm on a budget, so if anyone has recommendations for a more affordable product that can help, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

One idea I had for blocking light and heat is to secure some curtain liner strips to your existing curtains on the sides. You can tape them down so they don’t show, and that way, you can keep your curtain setup while addressing the light leakage! A plexiglass pane over the window would add a thermal barrier too, but it means you can’t open the window anymore. Just something to consider!
It sounds like you might need some blackout blinds instead of just curtains. They fit inside the window frame and will block more light. If you combine these with your existing curtains, it should make a difference! For heat, check out some reflective window film—it’s tricky to block heat while keeping your view, but this might help.
You could also go for Mylar space blankets! Just tape them over your windows, and they do a great job blocking heat and light. It's a quick and inexpensive fix that could work for you!
Have you thought about trying some tint film? There are loads of decorative and colored films available, plus installing an awning or shutters can be super effective! Blocking heat from the outside is usually the way to go if you want to keep the room cooler during the day.
You might want to try using a piece of rigid foam insulation cut to fit your window frame! I’ve done that before, and you can find options with a reflective layer that helps bounce heat back outside. Just keep in mind that while this works great, I totally understand if you don’t want to block the view entirely—that might not go over well with your significant other!
Good point! I love that idea, but I really enjoy looking out my window sometimes. I need something my partner would approve of that can be easily moved when we want to see outside.
Absolutely! I’m definitely leaning towards the tint film, but with so many options out there, I was hoping for a specific recommendation. The reviews seem mostly like spam!
