Hey everyone! I'm renting an apartment with large crank-style casement windows (24x45 inches), and while there's central air, my landlord controls it. I really need my own AC since I can't rely on them. The windows have screens that clip in with butterfly clips. I've heard about custom plexiglass for fitting around AC units, but it's too pricey for something I can't take when I move. Plywood is an option too, but it'll make my already dark apartment even gloomier. I'm considering using a clear, multiwall polycarbonate sheet. It's not perfectly clear, but it beats plywood for visibility. My main concern is how to secure it around the edges so it fits nicely without damaging the window frame. Would weatherstripping work? Or should I use tape? Any ideas? Thanks!

Don't underestimate small hardware stores! They often cut sheets of acrylic or glass pretty cheap. If you have an odd shape, just whip up a cardboard template. Call around and see what deals you can get!
You might want to try a clear plastic shower curtain for a budget-friendly option. Tape it to the frame and the AC exhaust hose—it's clear and could work well! Just as a heads up, this might let in more noise than a solid option, so keep that in mind.
I’d suggest going with a piece of plexiglass, and you can easily cut it with a razor blade. Super straightforward! Just make sure to measure twice before cutting to avoid any mistakes.
Check with a local glass shop for quotes. You might find that plexiglass is actually cheaper than polycarbonate, plus they can cut it to the right size for you!
