New to Gardening: How Can I Start a Calming Rose and Herb Garden on a Budget?

Hey everyone! I'm just starting out in gardening and I'm hoping to create a relaxing rose and herb garden without breaking the bank. A bit of background: I've been dealing with neurological facial tics since 2021 and despite trying various treatments, the cause still eludes me. My psychiatrist suggested focusing on calming activities to help manage the stress, and gardening seems like the perfect fit for me since I love cooking but lack a full kitchen. I find the idea of growing herbs and roses really soothing.

I'd love to hear your tips on:
- Easy-to-grow roses and herbs for beginners
- Budget-friendly ways to get started
- How I can figure out if I have a green thumb (or if that's just a joke, haha)
Thanks a ton for any advice!

Just a heads up about roses—they can be tricky! They often attract pests like spider mites and aphids, so you'll need to keep an eye on them. Look for clearances at places like Lowe’s or consider bare root roses in the spring. They love nutrients, so a little research on their care basics will go a long way!

I’m a beginner too, but I just wanted to wish you the best! Gardening can be such a great way to relax and it really helps distract from stress. Happy gardening!

I’d recommend starting with basil and mint! They’re super beginner-friendly and come in so many varieties. You can usually find seeds for cheap or even for free; try checking out your local library or community garden groups that might have seeds to give away. And if you have a local online neighborhood app, folks often share extra plants or cuttings there!

Great idea! I’m thinking about starting with basil, rosemary, and thyme based on your suggestion! Thanks!
