Overgrown Garden Help? Let’s Discuss!

Hey everyone! My partner and I just got a house, and the garden is way out of control with weeds, ivy, and bushes everywhere. We're both busy with full-time jobs and can't dedicate weekly time to it. We're looking for advice on how to reset the garden—thinking about starting fresh with grass, some small plants, and maybe even chickens! Any recommendations on tools we can rent or tips for dealing with the ivy and overgrown bushes? The plants have spread all over our fences and sheds, but we'd like to keep the trees if possible. Thanks a lot for any guidance!

Ugh, that ivy can be a nightmare! Just a heads up, it might take two or three seasons to really get it under control. It's pretty aggressive and can spread everywhere pretty quickly!

Oh no, it sounds like a big project ahead. It's seriously everywhere!

Consider reaching out to a local vocational school! They might have students looking for projects where they'd clear it out and suggest a manageable garden layout for some extra credit. Otherwise, hiring a landscaper may be your best bet. I've been through a similar situation and it can definitely get pricey to start fresh if you overplant. Good luck!

You can always cut down what you don't want and then consider using a total herbicide to control the weeds. If you're not into chemicals, just head to a nearby farming store and ask for some advice. Bring along pictures and clippings to help explain what you're dealing with!

I’m trying to avoid chemicals because of my dog. I’ll look into herbicides though. Thanks for the farming store tip!

It's best to take it slow! Start by looking for any plants that might still be alive from the previous owners. For the bushes and trees, identify what you want to keep and what can go. If you don't want some of them, just cut them down. As for the ivy, it's tough but it's worth tackling it now because getting rid of it can take a few seasons. For weeds, some can be pulled out by hand, while others might need a good trimming or some sort of chemical treatment to manage them. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions! I really want to get it looking nice again, but it’s messy right now. Appreciate the advice!

Have you thought about renting some goats? Seriously, they could help clear out a lot of the overgrowth! They can eat a bunch of those unwanted plants and it could be a fun solution, even if your partner isn’t convinced!

That could be hilarious! I think they’d do a better job than I would!
