Pier Blocks vs Concrete Footings for a Floating Deck: What’s the Best Choice?

I'm planning to build a floating deck measuring about 20'x12' in the middle of a redwood grove. The area has a slight slope, and while I was originally thinking of using concrete footings set in sono tubes for their durability, I've noticed that a lot of people opt for pier blocks instead, even on slopes. I'm interested in finding the best method for this project. What are your recommendations? How many pier blocks or concrete footings should I use?

Pouring concrete footings is definitely a solid method. The number of footings you'll need really depends on the span of your deck and the type of lumber you’re using for the beams. It’s worth the extra work for the long-term stability.

I’ve had a great experience using deck blocks. They save a lot of hassle compared to digging into unknown soil and they’re easier to remove if you ever want to restore the area back to its natural state.

Definitely! Those pesky roots can cause all sorts of issues.
