Plant Loss Stories: How Do You Cope When Your Green Friends Die?

Hey everyone! I'd love to hear your personal stories about losing plants that meant a lot to you. Maybe you were gifted a plant, bought one, or adopted it somehow, and then it sadly passed away. I still think about a polka dot begonia that I inherited from my mom, which originally came from my late Aunt. Unfortunately, it root-rotted and I eventually had to cut it back, losing everything. It's been years, but I still find myself wishing I had saved a piece of it. Do you have any flowers or plants you lost that really affected you? Let's connect over this—keep planting happiness!

I totally relate! I lost a philodendron birkin and a parlor palm from my mom's funeral plants when I fell into depression. I think about them often and wish I could try to keep them alive again. It hurts to see them go.

And I hear you about the 5-year-old lemon tree my grandfather gave me. Losing something that holds memories is tough!

When I moved to California, I had to leave my whole garden behind. It felt awful! The new owners destroyed it all and replaced it with a boring green lawn. My heart aches over all those beautiful plants. It’s frustrating when people don’t appreciate nature, especially after all the work I put into my pollinator garden.

Exactly! I can't believe people would rather spray chemicals and tear things up instead of nurturing them. I'm so sorry you had to walk away from your hard work!

I had a Saguaro cactus from my dad that came from his patient, who grew it from seed for 60 years. I took care of it for years, but after moving, it got a bacterial infection and fell over. I felt so guilty—I tried everything to save it. It’s a hard loss, especially with how much history was tied to it. It still stings a bit.

Wow, that’s such a heavy story! You did your best, and sometimes there's just nothing we can do. Thank you for sharing and for the poetry recommendation!
