Hey everyone! I recently had to replace my water line because my polythene one cracked and caused a leak into my subfloor and crawl space. I want to make sure I avoid any issues like that in the future. I'm considering switching to a braided steel line, as it seems like a solid choice, but I'd love to hear if there are any downsides to going with that option instead.

I switched to braided steel when I moved in as well. While it’s not a lifetime solution, I don’t really see any downsides compared to polythene other than the initial cost. For the peace of mind it brings, I think it's worth it!
Have you thought about using copper tubing instead? Some folks suggest it, but just keep in mind it's a bit more rigid. Plus, it can be less durable than braided steel since it’s more prone to bending or kinking, which can lead to leaks. I've had my fair share of expensive repairs due to that!
I'm with you on the braided steel! It's definitely more durable than polythene, so I think you’ll be just fine switching to that. The added strength can really help in preventing leaks, which is exactly what you're looking for.
