Received a Shocking Bill After Dishwasher Installation—What Should I Do?

I got a quote via text from a plumbing company for $250 to install my dishwasher, and they even confirmed it with photos showing the plumbing details. However, once the job was done, they sent me a bill for $580, claiming the installation required extra work because my dishwasher didn't have the necessary clips. But honestly, the installer just put screws through my cabinet instead! I'm really confused and wondering what my options are. Can I just pay the original $250? Also, I'm in Ontario, Canada—does that change anything?

You've gotten some solid advice here. Just so you know, $250 is quite low for a dishwasher install in most places, but if that was the quote you received, it's their issue to deal with the mix-up, not yours!

That's good to know! I did get a second quote for $350, so that helps.

Did the plumber mention those clips or any additional charges before starting? If not, they might not have the right to bill you extra. Generally, that’s considered unauthorized work.

Right, a lot of modern dishwashers can actually be installed without those clips, especially with stone countertops. It’s a common workaround!

Be careful about just sending them $250—that can lead to issues. Instead, try talking to them more assertively. They're charging more than double what they quoted, so they really need to justify that. You shouldn't be stuck paying for their mistake.

If you didn't agree to any changes, they can't charge you more than around $275 due to Ontario consumer protection laws. They have to stick to their original estimate plus 10%. You can definitely push back and insist they explain the extra charges because doubling the estimate like this is pretty outrageous! Just make sure to include that reference when you talk to them.

Thanks! I’ll send them an email with that info and see if I can resolve this.
