I'm a beginner woodworker and I've heard that using compression bits on my router table is great for preventing tear out. I own a couple of Whiteside bits, but they're pretty pricey. I'm looking for suggestions on alternative brands that offer good quality compression bits at a lower price. I specifically need bits with a 1/2" shank. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Honestly, I never skimp on router bits. I've made that mistake before and ended up spending way more buying replacements. Whiteside bits are top-notch, and anything from Bits and Bits is solid too. If you’re looking for something a tad more affordable, Diablo bits might not last as long, but they’re still a big step up from generic ones. I’ve tried buying cheap bits from Amazon for testing, but I got nervous after a mishap with a bit breaking and causing flying debris!
I’ve had a great experience with MLCS bits. They’re generally good in quality and a bit more budget-friendly compared to the higher-end brands.
Whiteside may seem expensive, but here’s a tip: you can send them your bit to get it sharpened for around $10, and they can do this multiple times. I’d rather pay $100 for a sharp, durable bit and sharpen it several times than buy a $40 bit and have to replace it.
I've actually found that you can get away with cheaper solid carbide spiral bits. I’ve tried expensive ones from Whiteside and Bits & Bits, but surprisingly, cheaper options from SpeTool and SYT did great for me! Just be wary of cheap brazed carbide bits; they tend to be poorly designed and machined.
You should definitely check out Woodpeckers. They manufacture their own bits, and the prices are pretty competitive, especially when they have sales and offer free shipping!
