I'm in the process of building a guitar and I'd like to use some scrap ebony pieces I have left from previous projects. These pieces are too short to turn on my lathe, and I need more precision than what the lathe offers. Can anyone recommend a good doweling jig that will work well with a dense wood like ebony?

I've been using a self-centering doweling jig for years and it does the trick quite nicely, especially when paired with a drill press for those hard woods. Just a heads up though: it sounds like you may be looking to actually make the dowels yourself rather than just position holes. This tool primarily helps with that placement.
It sounds like you might actually want to create dowels, not just drill holes for them. If you're using a drill press and need small dowels (or plugs as they're sometimes called), you could check out plug cutting bits. I’ve had luck with a midrange set, but keep in mind that you’re really pushing the limits of your tools with harder woods like ebony.
For just making dowels, you might want to try a dowel plate. It's a versatile tool to have in your shop but can be tricky to use at first, and it might not give perfectly straight results every time. Good luck!
