Recommendations for Fruit Trees That Provide Privacy Without Damaging a Sewer Line

I'm looking to plant some trees along the south side of my property to create a privacy screen from my neighbors, but there's a sewer line running about 6 feet from my fence. Ideally, I want to use fruit trees that can grow around 10 feet or taller. Are there any tall-growing trees that will give me privacy without risking damage to the sewer line? Is the sewer line something I should be particularly concerned about? I'm in California Zone 10b.

Just a heads up, if you're planting near a sewer line, consider future maintenance. If the line ever needs replacing, you might have to dig up whatever you plant. For evergreen options, think about plants like avocado or java plum, since you’re in zone 10b – they can provide good privacy!

If you’re looking for fruit trees, dwarf apple trees could be a solid choice since they don’t have aggressive rooting systems. If you maintain them well, they can effectively provide a hedge-like privacy. Just remember they'll need some support as they grow!

Great point! I'll definitely look into that.

It's generally not a good idea to plant trees too close to a sewer line. You might consider using shrubs or shadow-rooted plants, like rhododendrons, which can reach about 10 feet tall without aggressive roots. They could work well for your privacy needs without interfering with the sewer system.
