Recommendations for Software to Help with DIY Woodworking Projects?

I'm looking for some software to assist me in planning and designing my DIY woodworking projects. I need something that can help me figure out what materials I need to buy since I often forget what to get and end up purchasing random pieces of lumber without a clear plan. As a hobbyist in woodworking, I'm eager to learn more and get better at it!

I highly recommend using Google SketchUp for your designs. It's pretty user-friendly, and while it might be tricky to find a legal free version since the good old Google download isn't supported anymore, it can definitely help you visualize your projects. For material lists, Cut List Optimiser is fantastic! It's free and particularly shines when working with sheet goods, but you can also use it for solid timber. Just enter the dimensions and it will help you figure out what you need.

Is there a truly free version of SketchUp? I've searched, but all I find are paid options now.
