I'm looking for advice on replacing the washer and dryer in our basement, which is part of a rented 1913 Philly rowhome. The current units are pretty old but still work, and while our landlord is okay with us upgrading, the catch is that the only way into the basement is through a doorway that's only 21 inches wide. I've called appliance stores, and the smallest units they offer are 23.5 inches wide, so it seems like we're in a tough spot. We can't widen the doorway since we rent, but we want to make this work after all if we're going to be here for a while. So, I'm curious if there are any compact or stackable options that would fit through that narrow opening, or if anyone has had a similar experience and found a creative solution? Or are we basically at the mercy of these old machines for now?

Have you thought about looking at small washing machines meant for mobile homes? I saw one at Lowe's that’s under 20 inches wide. These compact models might be your best bet! Check it out here: [Small wash](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Jeremy-Cass-1-38-cu-ft-High-Efficiency-Impeller-Top-Load-Washer-Grey/5014685505?store=&cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-app-_-ggl-_-PMAX_APP_174_Laundry_Priority-Items-_-5014685505-_-online-_-0-_-0&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20283670469&gclid=Cj0KCQjwnovFBhDnARIsAO4V7mAPvEZu-5P8WmLexBuaJd99yqL0RHMC2vHSiPFffJiCM2AoTlZBdmEaAuxPEALw_wcB#no_universal_links).
You could also consider trying something a bit unconventional, like removing the door jamb to make more space. It might not be as noticeable in an older rowhome. Then you can bring the machines in and just reinstall the frame. If you haven't checked already, are there any other access points, like a window or an old coal chute? Sometimes there’s more flexibility than you think! It’s worth a look.

I haven't checked other access points, but that's a good idea. Just updated my post with a pic so you can see—it's pretty tight with the stairs right there.
