I'm working on a guitar back and need to resaw a 9" piece of walnut. Unfortunately, my bandsaw isn't large enough for the job, and I'm trying to avoid using a handsaw if possible. I'm considering starting with my table saw for half the cut on both sides, but I'm unsure if that will give me a good bookmatch effect. Any suggestions on how to achieve this?

Absolutely, you can remove about half an inch from the middle and still achieve a nice bookmatch. Just take your time with the cuts, and you should be all set!
Using the table saw to cut halfway on both sides is actually a solid approach for getting that bookmatch! Just remember to use the same reference edge for both cuts to keep everything aligned. After that, you can finish off the thickness with a bandsaw or a handsaw without losing the bookmatch effect. It should turn out great!

You can also check out local hardwood distributors. Many of them offer custom milling services for a reasonable price. It might be more cost-effective than investing in a machine that you'll only use occasionally!
