I recently got a huge hand-made solid cedar bar/wine cabinet from my neighbor, but it's in pretty rough condition. The white paint is peeling off, and there's a lot of cracks and gaps around the entire piece. Some gaps are really wide, and a few of the round feet are split and damaged too. I'm new to wood restoration and I could really use some advice on how to make this cabinet look great again. What's the best way to fill those cracks? Can I use caulk for the gaps? After sanding everything down, should I go for a paint or a stain? Also, any tips on how to prevent future cracking would be much appreciated! Hey! To start off, I’d recommend taking the cabinet apart as much as you can while keeping all the hardware safe. This way, you can work on each piece more easily. For the wide gaps, you might want to think about grafting in some new wood or using colored epoxy. For smaller cracks, options like epoxy, CA glue, or wood filler would work well—just choose based on the size and depth of the gaps. Since it’s solid cedar, rather than painting over it, suggest to your neighbor to apply a clear finish to showcase the wood's natural beauty. Pictures would definitely help us understand the full scope of the damage! But starting with the disassembly and addressing gaps with either epoxy or wood filler as needed is a solid plan. I’d recommend cleaning the cabinet well before applying any finish too, just to get rid of old paint residue.
