I just moved into a new house that features gorgeous, refinished 100+ year old pine floors from a reclaimed barn. Unfortunately, within a week, the floors are getting badly scratched due to my dog and regular wear and tear. We've had the dog's nails clipped and filed, but new scratches keep appearing daily. I even noticed that applying light pressure with my fingernail can leave a scratch. Is this typical for pine floors? What can I do to repair these scratches and prevent further damage aside from trimming my dog's nails? I understand wear is normal, but this seems excessive.

Pine isn't considered a true hardwood, so it's naturally softer. I'd recommend getting some area rugs or even dog booties to protect the floors. It might help cut down on marks from your pup!
Honestly, pine isn't really the most durable flooring if you have a dog. The best fix might be to use rugs for protection. Refinishing with a thick epoxy could also help, but it might wear down over time. So, yeah, rugs are your best bet for now!
You're right, pine is not the best choice for homes with pets. You can try putting down some good rug runners to protect high-traffic areas. Just keep an eye on your dog; they might think the rugs are toys!

Yeah, rugs are a good short-term solution! Make sure to get some non-slip backing so your dog doesn’t slip on them.
