I'm on the lookout for a jointing plane, and while I'd love to buy a traditional hand plane, my budget is a bit tight. I'm currently searching for a good used Stanley plane in my area. However, I'm really intrigued by Japanese hand planes and was wondering if anyone here has experience with a Japanese jointing plane. If I decide to go with one, what length should I consider? I believe traditional jointing planes are typically around 23 inches long, but I've heard Japanese ones are about 11 inches. Is that accurate?

I've got a Stanley jack plane, which isn't quite as long as a traditional jointing plane, and a Veritas low angle plane. Honestly, I enjoy using the Stanley even though it's cheaper and used. If you can find one, I definitely recommend it! It might not be the answer you were looking for, but it's a solid choice in my opinion.

I’m actually on the hunt for a Stanley #6 or #7!
