I received two "Sweet Million" tomato plants from a friend who bought a 6-pack. She planted four but left the other two in the original tray. Now, these plants are about 8 inches tall but still crammed in that little tray! I'm planning to plant them in the ground tomorrow and I'm wondering if I should bare root them first to help loosen their roots, or could that potentially harm the plants?

It's pretty common for plants in those trays to become root bound. I usually take a sharp knife and make a few vertical cuts on the roots to prevent them from coiling tightly. If you don’t, they might continue to wrap around and harm the plant in the long run.

I typically just use my fingers to loosen them up, but I’ve never had ones this tall still in the tray! It’s impressive they've held on this long, haha!
