Hey everyone, I'm looking for some perspective from interior designers or anyone who's worked with one. I've been collaborating with a designer I really like—she has a fantastic style and I'm mostly happy with how the project is unfolding. However, a few things are giving me pause, and I want to figure out if they're typical in the industry or if I should be concerned.
She initially told us that she would share her trade discounts, which was cool. But I later learned that some designers also receive commissions from vendors, and she never mentioned that. When asked about prices, she claimed she was getting us the 'best price' but didn't clarify if that included any kickbacks to her.
Another thing is that she mostly recommends furniture from one specific brand, which she says is to keep everything consistent and save on shipping. I've considered if she might be pushing this brand because she gets a commission from them (10% of the total sale order, it turns out). Even when I asked to explore options from other vendors, it felt like she was reluctant.
So, I'd love to hear from those of you in the know:
- Is it common for designers not to disclose commissions upfront?
- Should I be worried that she didn't bring this up herself?
- Is it typical for them to promote just one brand?
- How do ethical designers handle these issues regarding transparency with trade discounts and commissions?
- Would any of this make you reconsider working with her?
Thanks for your help! I'm not trying to be overly critical of someone who's working hard; I'm just trying to be sure I'm being treated fairly.

Do you really expect her to work for free? Of course she’s making money from you. Sharing commission amounts isn’t something most designers disclose unless asked. You're free to ask for other brands if you want, but they usually stick to what they know best.
Honestly, you shouldn't be too concerned unless you're being pushed toward subpar options. You're not locked into buying anything specific, so just let your designer know you'd like to see more options.
You make a good point—no one can make us buy anything! But we did pay a design fee upfront, which included the understanding that she’d pass on any discounts. Finding out about the commissions later felt a bit off, and it's raised trust issues for us.
As long as you like what she's choosing and the prices are fair, I don't see the big deal. Whether it's called a commission, a kickback, or whatever, the main thing is whether you're happy with the results.
I do appreciate the pieces she’s picked, and I don’t mind her making money. I just wonder if future selections will be influenced by her incentives rather than my style preferences. If this is how it usually is, I guess I shouldn't take it too personally.

That’s true. We already paid a design fee—this just changes how I feel about it.
