I'm currently in the process of buying a home, and originally I wanted a garage mainly to protect my car from the weather, since I don't have a lot of stuff to store. However, I've noticed that many houses in my area either don't have garages or the prices are significantly higher for those that do. I'm considering houses with driveways for off-street parking and thinking about adding a carport or garage later on. From what I've seen online, carports range from $3k to $10k, while garages can go from $35k to $85k. Does this pricing seem accurate to others? I'm trying to figure out if I can realistically add a carport when I buy a house, or if it will be a longer-term project.

Prices for carports and garages really do vary depending on where you live. It’s a good idea to talk to a few contractors and get some quotes. If you're mainly looking to keep your car out of the elements, a carport might be a more cost-effective solution, but keep in mind it might not be as satisfying long-term. Just make sure you look at all your options!

Thanks for the insight! I'm just a bit worried since my needs have really limited my options. I used to park in a garage, so I know what I'm giving up, but if I can save $20-$30k with a carport, it might be worth it.
