Should I Buy a Thermal Camera for Detecting Plumbing Leaks?

I've had a few instances lately where it sounded like water was running in my home, but I couldn't find any visible leaks. By the next day, everything was fine, but it got me thinking about investing in a thermal camera that can help detect leaks. I'm curious if it's worth purchasing one for around $200, or if I should just call a plumber whenever I suspect there's a problem. Unfortunately, there aren't many emergency plumbing services available where I live, just one that offers leak detection. Would a thermal camera be a useful tool to have for potential issues?

I picked up a thermal camera for home diagnostics, and while I can't say it's been super necessary, it’s nice having around for checking insulation and such. Just make sure it’s not going to be a dust collector after one use!

Honestly, it seems like you might be trying to find a solution to something that's not a big problem. Plumbing leaks usually don't make noises unless it’s a major issue, which you can usually spot visually. Maybe what you’re hearing is just a noisy toilet or something minor like that.

Definitely check your toilet! A leaky flapper can cause a lot of water loss.

I borrowed a FLIR camera from work for this and while it’s a fantastic tool, it might not be worth the cost for home use unless you plan to use it regularly. The phone attachments are cheaper and work decently well.

Yeah, those cell phone add-ons can be quite effective for basic use around the house!

I got an infrared camera that connects to my phone, and it works great for leak detection and other purposes. Plus, it’s affordable, so I’d say go for it if you want a handy tool to have.

I bought an infrared camera mainly for insulation checks, and while it didn’t really help with leaks like I thought, it is a fun gadget that can spot temperature differences around the house. Just be aware it won’t specifically detect water.

Have you tried checking with your local library? They might have thermal cameras available for rent!

If you’re consistently hearing running water, maybe it’s just your water heater doing its thing. Unless you see evidence of a leak, it might not be worth getting any extra equipment.
