Should I Choose a 3/8 or 1/2 Stubby Impact Wrench for My DIY Projects?

I'm planning to buy my first stubby impact wrench during Ohio's no sales tax holiday, but I'm stuck on whether to go with a 3/8 or a 1/2. I don't have any impact sockets yet. I've heard that a 3/8 might be cheaper, especially since it uses smaller sockets, but I also think it could be convenient to only need one socket set when I eventually get a 1/2 M18 impact. Most of my work will be DIY on a 1949 Packard and some tasks on my daily vehicles. What do you all think?

The M12 3/8 impact is a solid choice for most tasks. If you sometimes need a stronger tool, just buy the specific sockets for those heavier jobs. I use adapters to switch between sizes, which works great! Also, check out Astro's 'nano' impact sockets; they're a perfect fit with the M12.

I just worked with some mechanics at a shop, and they mainly stick to using regular chrome sockets even with their impacts. They only roll out the 1/2 impacts for heavy-duty work like suspension parts, so you might find you don't need the 1/2 as much as you think!

Honestly, if you can swing it, having both is the best option. I use my 3/8 for everyday tasks and pull out the 1/2 for the heavy stuff, like truck rims or suspension work. The 3/8 is tough and reliable for daily use, and it’s super versatile!

If you're looking to save some cash, the 3/8 impact is the way to go. It not only costs less, but also means cheaper socket sets. Plus, both sizes pretty much accomplish the same tasks for DIY projects.

I vote for the 1/2 impact. The thing is, a lot of 3/8 socket sets max out at 22mm, so if you're planning on tackling bigger jobs later on, the 1/2 will cover you better in that regard.

That’s a good point! It depends on what you’ll be working on in the long run.
