I'm planning to paint my fireplace this weekend and I want to know if it's really necessary to clean it first. I know I'm supposed to brush and vacuum the brick, but I read that some people recommend using TSP to degrease it and get rid of soot. The thing is, the fireplace doesn't look dirty and I can't see any soot. If I go ahead and brush the brick and vacuum up any dust, can I skip straight to priming it?
