I just had my salvia and creeping phlox planted directly into the ground by my husband. Unfortunately, I forgot to remind him to break up the roots since they were somewhat root bound. Now I'm wondering if I should dig them up, loosen the roots, and replant them. What would you all recommend?

I faced a similar situation with a mountain laurel; three years later, when I finally dug it up, the roots were still in the shape of the pot! I'd recommend shaking them up or making some cuts to help them spread out better.
I don't think it's a big deal for those plants specifically. I've seen more issues with trees being root bound. Your salvia and creeping phlox should be fine as they grow.
I've always heard you're supposed to break apart root-bound roots, but honestly, I’ve planted them straight from the pot before without any issues. They usually adapt on their own, so I’d suggest leaving them as they are for now.
If it were me, I’d definitely dig them up and refresh the roots a bit. It won't harm them, and it'll help them establish better in their new spot.
