Should I DIY My Solar Panel Installation or Hire a Pro?

I got a quote for a DIY project to install 36 410w solar panels on a ground-mounted system for around $30K, which doesn't include any rebates. On the flip side, a company is offering to install 42 590w panels for $56K, or $39K after rebates. They had a higher price quote for the 410w panels too. While I know I'd save some money by doing it myself, I'm concerned about the amount of work involved in handling so many panels. I consider myself handy, but would it just take too long to do this solo?

If you're comfortable building things like fences, then you can definitely tackle a ground mount system on your own. Sure, it involves some heavy lifting, but you can hire someone just for the tough parts like digging post holes. Plenty of tutorials are available to guide you through the process!

Also, instead of concrete, you might want to try an earth spike or a ground ballast system. It could simplify the installation!

Your DIY quote seems really high! For a straightforward install, a budget closer to $10K would be more realistic, especially considering the inverter costs. Make sure you’re factoring in the right materials and equipment!

I completely agree! I've seen deals for good quality 400w panels for about $1k each, which could help you save a ton.

Both quotes sound quite steep. Just so you know, you could save around $7-8K by going with a DIY mount design. Many solid plans are easy to find online. I set up eight 430w panels on my RV, and they were pretty manageable. Larger panels can be a bit tricky if you're going it alone though!
