Should I Fix Rusty Porch Columns Myself or Hire a Pro?

I recently discovered some rust spots on the two wooden pillars by my pool. I didn't check them until now, and when I poked at one, it opened up to reveal a hole at the bottom. It seems like there's a wooden column resting on a metal plate, but I'm uncertain if this was always like this or if it's just been damaged by water over time. The metal piece appears mostly flat, which makes me think it might have been open from the start. Has anyone dealt with a similar issue? Should I attempt to fix it myself, or would it be wiser to hire a contractor? I'm pretty handy, but I want to be cautious when it comes to structural repairs. You could definitely handle this yourself if you're up for it. Just make sure to secure the column first, cut out the damaged area, and put in new materials. But honestly, since this involves structural integrity, it might be safer to hire a pro. If you mess it up, it could lead to more dangerous issues down the line. I'd say pay someone to get it done right.

That makes sense. Who would be the right person to contact for this? A carpenter?
