Should I Fix This Cracked Joist Myself or Get Professional Help?

I found a significant crack in a joist in my basement, and I'm trying to decide if I can handle the repair myself or if I should hire a professional. The cracked joist is located above some major HVAC ducts, so I'm a bit concerned about the urgency of addressing this issue. Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated! You can definitely sister that joist yourself! Just get some lumber that matches the width—looks like it's at least a 2x8. It's a straightforward project if you follow some guide or video. You'll save money and gain some experience in the process!

Sistering the joist is easy and cost-effective. Use a 2x4 in addition to a bottle jack to push it back together. There are tons of super helpful videos on YouTube that can walk you through it. You got this!

I’ve done this myself on a few joists, and it’s quite manageable. One tip I found helpful was to add wood glue into the crack before jacking it up to secure it better. Using Timberlok structural wood screws instead of lag screws can really simplify the process too. Just be sure to check a few tutorials first!
