Should I Get a Greenhouse or Plant Directly in the Ground for My Edible Garden?

Hey everyone! I'm new to gardening, and I'm excited to grow my own food this year. Last year, I planted an apple tree and a persimmon tree in my backyard, but I'm not sure what to do next. Should I invest in a greenhouse, or would it be better to go with raised flower beds or just plant directly in the ground? I'm also curious about which crops are great to start with. Any tips?

Starting small is key! I'd recommend setting up one or two small in-ground beds or raised bags, which can be moved to catch the right light. Herbs are a perfect starting point since they're super easy to grow. Consider planting an herb garden; once you taste fresh herbs, you'll be hooked! I also experimented with cold frames this winter for some of my older beds and used hoops with plastic on raised beds, which is working out well. Just be prepared to monitor the temperature a bit.

I'm also from LI! The best method really depends on your soil quality and budget. I've had great success just planting directly in the ground. Easy crops like kale, scallions, and chard work perfectly for spring and fall. In the summer, tomatoes, peppers, and basil are favorites of mine. Don't forget to add flowers too—they attract pollinators! Also, give everything a good layer of organic mulch and use organic fertilizer to improve your soil over time.

If you're looking for something easier to maintain, in-ground planting is a great option. It allows plants to access moisture directly from the soil, which can reduce your watering needs. You could also consider using pots for herbs and greens, especially if you're unsure about the quality of your soil, but keep in mind that you'll need to water them daily. Greenhouses are fantastic for extending your growing season and starting seedlings, plus they offer a nice space for storing tools.
