Hey everyone! I just bought my first home and I'm looking to invest in a paint sprayer because rolling and brushing just aren't cutting it for me. I've heard there are two main types: airless sprayers and HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) sprayers. Since I plan to paint small bedrooms, repaint some IKEA furniture, and tackle a few woodworking projects, I want something that gives me a smooth finish, especially for the furniture, but can also handle walls without too much hassle. Based on your experiences, are paint sprayers worth it for a beginner like me? Which type would you recommend and do you have any brand tips? Thanks!

I tried an airless sprayer and had a tough time. The overspray can go everywhere, and if you don’t mask properly, you’ll be left with paint where you don’t want it. For a beginner, unless you have a completely empty room, I would suggest stick with a brush and roller, they’re just easier to control for indoor spaces. If you’re doing cabinets or outdoor projects though, then a sprayer could be beneficial! Just make sure you have a designated area for clean-up.
If you're doing furniture, an HVLP sprayer is definitely the way to go. They're easier to control and give that fine, smooth finish you're looking for. Plus, less overspray means less mess. Just keep in mind that it might need some paint dilution depending on the type you use. On the other hand, airless sprayers put out more paint and are faster, which is great for larger projects like walls, but they can be tricky for furniture since they often lead to drips and require a bit of practice. Clean-up is also much tougher with airless sprayers. Honestly, for your needs, I think HVLP is the best choice!
Thanks for the clarification! It sounds like HVLP is the best fit for what I want to do, especially with the furniture.
I have an HVLP sprayer, and while it's a good tool, I'd say for small projects like rooms, rolling and brushing might actually save you a lot of hassle. Sprayers can be pretty messy, and you'd need to mask everything off, which can take longer than just using a roller. If you're looking to do multiple rooms, you might find it easier with traditional methods. Sprayers are awesome for outdoor projects or large areas, but for interiors, you’ll likely find rolling easier.
I totally understand the struggle with overspray! I think I’ll take your advice and stick to rollers for now.
