Hey everyone! I'm trying to decide between investing in a nice scroll saw, like a Hegner, or going for a bandsaw. I know the scroll saw is super versatile for a variety of projects, but the bandsaw has its own advantages as well. I'm primarily looking to cut out carving blanks and I'm curious about whether a scroll saw can make straight and square cuts, considering the blade's thickness and flexibility. What do you all think? Which tool do you prefer for your projects?

I used to own a Hegner scroll saw and it was fantastic! You could crank it up to a high speed and balance a nickel on edge without it tipping over. I had a Dremel before that which was noisy and wobbly, so the Hegner felt like a dream.
For bandsaws, I've had good luck with Grizzly models. They can come with pretty lousy blades, but swapping it out for a better one makes all the difference. If you plan on doing a lot of internal cuts, a scroll saw's ability to thread the blade through drilled holes can be handy, but a bandsaw will save you time when cutting thicker materials.

If you're using thinner wood for your carvings, I'd recommend going with a scroll saw. It really excels at that. But if you plan to work with anything thicker, I’d suggest a bandsaw instead since it can handle larger pieces better. Just something to think about!
Definitely a bandsaw for me! They’re just so reliable and efficient for most cutting tasks.
Really depends on your needs. If you're looking at 10 or 12 inches, those are great options! I'd look for something that matches your workspace too.
