I'm about to buy my first router to cut a rabbit on some cabinets, and I'm torn between getting the DeWalt cordless fixed base router (model dcw600b) for $150 or the new plunge router (model dcw620b) for $300. I've primarily used a router in a table setup until now, and I'm looking for the most versatile tool for my upcoming projects. Would it be wise to invest in the more expensive plunge router, or would the smaller fixed base option suffice? Is there anything a plunge router can't do that a fixed base can? I already have plenty of 5amp batteries and chargers for my other DeWalt tools. Thanks for any advice!

I've got both types of routers, and honestly, I rarely use the plunge feature. If you're planning to do precision work, a fixed base is usually better for consistent cuts. Plunge routers can be more versatile in some situations, especially if you're short on space since they're easier to maneuver over your workpiece. I personally prefer using a plunge router for mortises, but if you're focusing on tabletop projects, a fixed base might be the way to go.

Yeah, I agree! The fixed base makes adjustments so much easier and it's perfect for table setups.
